UPCOMING YLC EVENTS REMINDER, Parent Meeting: November 19 On Wednesday November 19th, I will be conducting a meeting for applicant and alumni parents to discuss their concerns and recommendations for their children's future in higher education as well as their active involvement in the local community through the YLC. Additionally, information on how your parents can become involved in parent committees for chaperoning, fundraising, and future celebrations will be discussed that evening from 6:00-7:00 PM at 217 N. Stanton. UPDATE, YLC Recognition by El Paso City Council: DECEMBER (TBA) Members of the Texas, Southwest, and Texas Ambassador teams and staff will be recognized by City Council--the final date is pending. Utilize this opportunity to meet your council person and members of the local English and Spanish news stations. UPDATE, El Paso YLC Team Banquet: FEBRUARY (TBA)
Although this event was rescheduled for November 22, it has been postponed until the spring to coincide with the formation of the 2009 team(s). Multiple El Paso alumni from the 2008 Texas Great Debate, Southwest Great Debate, Texas Ambassador Great Debate, and National YLC be will be highlighted, and a dance for 2008 alumni and applicants for the 2009 El Paso YLC Team will follow immediately.
REMINDER, YLC Application Deadline: December 1 This year's YLC application deadline will be December 1. The number of complete applications submitted to NHI by this date will determine how many 2009 Great Debates the El Paso YLC team will attend and the number of staff necessary to carry out local training. THE NATIONAL HISPANIC INSTITUTE & THE YOUNG LEADERS CONFERENCE FOR 9TH GRADERS
The YLC focuses on communication as a powerful tool of leadership.
The Young Leaders Conference (YLC) allows high school freshmen the opportunity to test and improve their written and verbal communication skills through organized discussions and debates about issues that impact today's Latino community. Students gain confidence in public speaking and an appreciation of communication as a powerful tool of leadership.
Students gain experience creating content-rich arguments, communicating them through powerful, eloquent expression, and carefully analyzing the arguments presented by their peers.
After attending YLC, students benefit from:
* Expanded written and verbal communication skills
* Increased knowledge of advanced vocabulary
* Greater confidence in seeking out and taking on leadership roles
* Increased knowledge and awareness of issues vital to the 21st century Latino community
Admission Requirements
NHI staff and community volunteers annually visit key high schools throughout the nation to identify students to attend NHI programs.
Additional students may be nominated by NHI alumni, high school guidance offices, or seek admission to programs based solely on their own interest. Qualified students are accepted to the programs on a “first come, first serve” basis.
All students who wish to become involved in NHI programs must meet the following admission requirements.
* Must submit the appropriate application with parent and counselor
signatures, along with a student photo and list of accomplishments
* Submit most recent copy of transcript (for students applying in the fall
semester, your transcript from the previous spring semester is
acceptable) Possess a 88 GPA on a 100 point scale
* Be enrolled in a college bound or honors curriculum
